  • Bonded Warehouses: A New Development Trend in Vietnam and Regional Logistics Landscape

In the context of ever-changing global trade and international supply chains, Vietnam’s Bonded Warehouse system is experiencing significant growth, emerging as a vital link in the modern Logistics industry.

Overview of Vietnam’s Logistics Sector and the Demand for Bonded Warehousing

According to a report by the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Vietnam’s Logistics sector is growing at a rate of 14-15% annually, generating an estimated value of USD 40-42 billion. Currently, the country has around 3,000 domestic Logistics enterprises and the presence of 25 major international corporations, contributing 4-5% to the national GDP and directly employing over one million workers.

However, the Vietnamese Logistics industry still faces challenges such as underdeveloped infrastructure, high costs, and market fragmentation. Experts at the Vietnam Logistics Conference 2024 emphasized that digital transformation and sustainable growth are top priorities. Government investment in infrastructure and digitization is expected to create new opportunities for industry expansion.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Can, Director General of the General Department of Vietnam Customs, Bonded Warehouses in Vietnam are becoming essential tools for connecting international trade with the domestic supply chain. “Beyond merely storing goods, Bonded Warehouses are increasingly taking on roles such as coordination, classification, and acting as key transshipment points—especially amid the rapid growth of cross-border e-commerce,” he stated.

This role transition is not coincidental. Today’s import-export businesses require greater flexibility in distributing goods, deferring tax obligations, and optimizing cash flow. Bonded Warehouses provide exactly these advantages: they allow businesses to temporarily store goods that have not yet cleared customs, enabling them to preserve, package, classify, and later export the goods to other countries or release them into the domestic market as needed.

The Development of Bonded Warehousing in Vietnam

According to a report by Source of Asia, Vietnam’s warehousing sector is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11% from 2024 to 2032. The increasing demand for cold storage and the emergence of high-tech Logistics centers are key elements of Vietnam’s evolving economic ecosystem.

Logistics expert Mr. Tran Ngoc Son from the Vietnam Institute for Logistics Development shared: “The Bonded Warehouse model in Vietnam is evolving to integrate more functions—from storage to order processing, labeling, and container maintenance—enabling businesses to operate flexibly in a volatile global trade environment.”

However, the rapid expansion of warehouses also poses the risk of oversupply, which could negatively affect rental rates. As such, businesses need to closely monitor the market to avoid imbalances.
